Here’s an interesting story about a Mechanical Engineering graduate, and her unconventional career path in the aerospace sector as well as a start-up company in the renewable energy sector. I always find it very interesting; the wide variety of things engineering graduates end up doing.

Professor, if you don’t mind me asking, what kinds of non-software/programming co-op placements do Waterloo engineering students land in their first or second co-op? I’ve heard a lot about the awesome placements for ECE and software students, but where do some of the other disciplines (i.e. mechanical) land jobs?
There are over 4,000 employers that hire engineering students, and many are not software jobs but it’s too much to make a list. Try looking at some profiles of our student ambassadors (https://uwaterloo.ca/engineering-student-ambassadors/our-ambassadors-0) for examples of where they worked in different programs. Essentially, it’s any industry, government or research institution in Canada (and many abroad).
